Welcome to the Old English Court!

3 September 2020
The Old English Court has become a part of Zaryadye Park. From September 5, you can visit one of the oldest civil buildings in Moscow with a renewed exposition individually and with tours.

Старый Английский двор

The chambers on Varvarka street, built in the 16th century, is one of the oldest foreign representative offices in the capital. This monument of civil architecture is closely connected with the beginning and formation of Russian-English relationship during the reign of Tsar Ivan IV and Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1994 in the ancient chambers, with the participation of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, a museum was opened. For many years it remained a part of the Museum of Moscow association.

The museum presents unique findings discovered during archaeological excavations and the construction of the park on the territory of ancient districts Zaryadye and Kitai-Gorod. The collection, which includes household items of Muscovites, coins, fragments of weapons and other artifacts, was previously displayed in Zaryadye Underground Museum. Now it will be presented in the chambers of the Old English Court. The usual exposition of the museum, located in several rooms, from the ancient basement with masonry of the early 16th century to the restored premises of the 17th century, will be renewed with the help of modern technologies.

“Now in the chambers of the Old English Court, we can implement ideas on the contrast of eras, using multimedia technologies, including wall projection, light and sound design, which will enhance the perception of the existing exhibition. And the centuries-old history of the building, connected with Zaryadye region, easily lets to fit the museum into the excursion routes and the event program of the park”, said Ivan Demidov, the director of Zaryadye park.

The first excursions will take place on September 5 and 6, as part of the City Day they will be free. Register in Schedule and Tickets section. From September 8, the museum will start working by usual schedule. The tours will take place every 30 minutes, for the safety of guests, the number of participants in a group will not exceed 10 people.
Groups of up to 15 people can join a walking tour without the visiting the museum. The Navigation and Arithmetic Schools will open their doors for children. They will be held from Tuesday to Friday according to the schedule. Also in autumn, the Old English Court will host participants of the Olympiad “Museums. Parks. Manors ".

The museum will be included in the Sightseeing historical tour along Zaryadye, which includes a tour of the Kitaygorodskaya wall, built in the 16th century and restored in the second half of the 20th century. You can study the history of Moscow with a guide or on your own, renting an audio guide at the ticket office of the park.
