Astronomers in Zaryadye Will Tell About the Origin of Spots on the Sun and Solar Prominence

24 September 2019
In the very center of Moscow, in Zaryadye park, massive astronomical observations will be held as part of the international project “100 Hours of Astronomy”. On the Meadow, specialists of the Moscow Planetarium will install modern portable telescopes and conduct not only night, but also unusual daytime observations.

Pre-registration for the events is not required. The first open observation will be held on September 25 from 12:00 to 15:00. With the help of 2 portable telescopes installed on the meadow near Large Amphitheater, guests will have a chance to see in detail the surface of the Sun. Astronomers will explain why dark spots appear on its disk and how prominences, dense condensations of cold matter, rise and stay above its surface. The participants will also learn how to choose the right solar filter for a telescope.

On September 27, from 19:30 to 21:30, the night observations will take place. It will be dedicated to the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter. Everyone is invited to take a closer look at lunar craters, its seas and mountains. Besides, guests will see Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, as well as Saturn with its famous rings. Also, at this period, there is a chance to observe the International Space Station, which makes one rotation around the Earth in about 90 minutes.

Observations in the park are a part of the annual international project “100 Hours of Astronomy”. Its purpose is to draw attention to stars studies and to allow everyone to dive into this area at least for a while. First, the Moscow Planetarium joined the project in 2011. The event was a great success among the people, and since then the project has been held annually.
The project is timed to the 90th anniversary of the Moscow Planetarium, which takes place on November 5. The building, designed by architects Mikhail Barshch and Mikhail Sinyavsky, is a monument of the era of constructivism. The authors of the project were especially proud of the giant dome, the diameter of which is 25 meters. Here guests can see the planets and constellations of the solar system, attend lectures and watch scientific films. Every day, up to three thousand guests visit the Planetarium, and about a million people visit it annually.
