May lily

(Maianthemum bifolium)

The hazel grouse and thrush often eat the berries of the May lily. Eighty to eighty-five percent of the time the seed remains in good condition for germination after passing through the bird’s digestive system. For the first year of its life the young May lily remains underground. The first leaves only appear above the surface during the second year.
