Some believe that the name ‘dog rose’ is somewhat pejorative and originated from comparing this wild rose with more cultivated garden varieties. But another theory suggests that the Latin name ‘canina’ (of the dog) arose when in classical times the roots of the plant were used as a remedy against bites from rabid dogs.
