This species received its name in honor of its first collector, the prominent German botanist Fyodor Kondratyevich Bieberstein (born Baron Friedrich August Marschall von Bieberstein). The scientist worked for the Russian emperors Paul I and Alexander I and rose to the position of Chief Inspector of silkworm husbandry in South Russia. With his active participation the Crimean Nikitsky Botanical Garden was founded. He published several important papers about the flora of the Caucasus and Southern Russia. The Bieberstein herbarium had approximately 10 000 samples. After his death, it was purchased for the Botanical Museum of the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg.
