How is comedy done? Why some things are fun for one, while others stay indifferent? How to explain the nature of the comic and is it possible to make more funny jokes?
What makes the traditionally “low” genre one of the most difficult to study and why does its scope go far beyond the boundaries of cinematography?
Romcoms about true love in New York, satire and parody of typical things, black comedy, sitcoms, farce, and absurdity — what unites them? What are the mechanisms of humor and jokes?
The lectures will reveal the secrets of comedy on examples:
- universal comedy of silent films: the language of slapstick and gags;
- black comedy — from Marquis de Sade to "Harold and Maude" by Hal Ashby;
- a very black comedy — the humor of Bob and Peter Farrelly;
- not a shameful conversational comedy of Woody Allen;
- the absurd comedy of Monty Python, Eric Andre.
We will also talk about postmodernism, irony and new sincerity.
