In 1721 two rows of birch trees were planted along the Admiralty meadow district of St Petersburg. This alley of trees became the starting point of the famous Nevsky Prospect. The silver birch not only became an official symbol of Russia, but also Finland, Sweden and the American state of New Hampshire. The name of the famous Icelandic singer Bjork, also translates as ‘birch’.
