Rowan

(Sorbus aucuparia)

The fruit of the rowan, which most people would call berries, are in fact more like small apples from a botanist’s point of view. The word ‘aucuparia’ translates approximately from Latin as ‘bird attractor’. The bright red rowan berries were used in the past as bait for catching birds.
