Common Hop

(Humulus lupulus)

The Latin generic name Lupulus means “wolf” and explains the property of hops to entwine and strangle other plants like a wolf strangling a sheep. The so-called “cones” of the hop, collected at the beginning of their ripening, are used for baking and brewing beer. They prevent beer from souring and provide it with a distinctive bitter taste.
