From the height of Kitaygorodskaya wall

8 September 2017
On the territory of the park there are objects of cultural heritage: the Church of Barbara the Great Martyr, the chambers of the Old English Court, the Temple of Maxim the Blessed, the Cathedral of the Znamensky Monastery, the Brotherhood Corps and the bell tower, the Romanov Boyars' Chambers, the Church of St. George the Victorious on the Pskov Hill, the Church of the Conception of Anna, Kitaygorodskaya wall, where for the first time anyone can climb and see a restored architectural monument.

In 1534, during the reign of Ivan the Terrible's mother Queen Elena Glinskaya, a wide moat was dug, and a year later the construction of a stone fortress began. The wall was erected by the whole world: trade people and boyars gave money, and the residents built. By 1538 the Kitaygorod fortress was ready: the line of defensive fortifications reached a length of 2 567 meters, 14 battle towers appeared.

The fortress of the new generation was designed to reflect the powerful artillery fire, had squat towers, a thickness of about 6.5 meters and a height of 6-8 meters. Kitaigorodskaya wall is the first fortress wall in Russia, in which artillery was installed at the top of the walls. The battle course of the wall more than 4 m wide allowed the team of two horses to quickly drag the guns from place to place.

Twice in history Kitaygorodsky Wall played a military role. In 1571 the she defended Moscow during the raid of Khan Devlet-Giray, in 1611 from the Poles.

In the 1930s and 1950s, most of the medieval fortress was dismantled. Up to now, only its small fragments have been preserved, one of which is kept in the Underground Museum Zaryadye.
